We are very gradually working
We are very gradually working our way into cork’s nightlife. We have been out for a few token pints, and I went clubbing with tom’s sisters a couple of times, but this weekend we have social events and outings planned for nearly every night. This weekend is the biggest weekend of the year in cork. I have heard even veteran pubbers say that it just gets a bit too crazy for them this weekend, which is the cork jazz festival (aka the guinness festival). So it will be a good weekend to head out and see what really goes on in this city.
Last night, which is really the beginning of the weekend here, we went out to see Asian Dub Foundation at the Savoy Theatre. The venue is wonderful, big and airy, and it has a very cool decor. they kept most of the old theatre architecture, and added modern lighting and a nice hardwood dancefloor, and a very good soundsystem. I was expecting something a bit more downtempo than what we actually got, but it was still good fun.

I actually can’t remember the last time I was at a show where there were boys with guitars jumping around on stage, wearing caps and attitude and revving up the crowd. Cool guitar melodies, and a very cool drummer, but the lyrics got to be a bit much for me. Maybe I would have appreciated them more if they were at a volume where I could understand the words?
I liked the bhangra influence, and I wish there was more of it. the albums I remember hearing seemed to be more melodic and more asian-beat, not so much the beastie boys with guitars. but it was still a very good show, and I had a great time.
Up next for the rest of the weekend? tonight is a play at the Granary Theatre, called The Encyclopedia of the Dead, which is part of the Fringe festival, and Saturday the plan is to check out some jazz, maybe at one of the hotels in town.
