oh, the humidity

here is a post from last weekend that I wrote but didn’t get a chance to post.

Oh the humidity!

We finally arrived in Ireland on Wednesday the 24th, after a quick day in London. We met and went for a few pints with some friends of Tom’s that live on the same road. It was surreal, walking into this apartment where there are men in the middle of a lively discussion of darwinism, and when I am introduced to one of them he replies “enchante”. like a scene out of a novel, it was.

Then on to ireland, on the cheapest, most overcrowded and noisy flight I’ve ever been on. But I had no trouble getting through customs and we were on our way. I actually had more trouble getting through customs in London on our way back from Greece, but we think that was more the result of bored customs officers at midnight than anything else.

We’ve been here for just under a week, and have been house-hunting for about 2 days. It’s frustrating, because of the way that landlords go about renting the places. Instead of making an application and letting the landlord choose the best tenant, whoever gets there first with their money and decides to take it gets it. So if you can’t decide if you want it at the time, and call back later, it will probally be gone. which puts a fair bit of pressure on deciding right then when you view it.

The choices range from nice and very expensive (900 euros and up) or desperately needing a paint or too far away and not expensive (750-850 euros). Hopefully we get lucky soon, or we take something without a lease and keep looking. I’m still hopeful, but I do really want to find someplace soon.

we haven’t uploaded the photos yet because we need to be somewhere with broadband in order to do that. but tom starts work on thursday (!!) so we can do it sometime after that.

hopefully everyone back in edmonton is doing well…write to us and tell us all the new gossip!

as a further update, we have now found a very nice flat, which is a little on the expensive side but otherwise pretty great. close to all the shops, tom’s work, yet still enough off the main roads to be quiet and secure. pictures will follow as soon as I can figure some way to get them off the camera and onto the internet. :-)

I’m looking forward to settling into this new place, and my project for this week is to find a good job somewhere nearby. But on the whole, things are going well. and I will try to update a bit more frequently now that I have a fixed address…
