Mosquito killers on the rampage and other adventures

July 10, 2002

We are one full day into the Greek Holiday experience, and so far our greatest issue has been the mosquitoes in our accomodations. Everything else has been pretty idyllic…

Mosquitoes may not seem like much of an issue, but the bug dreams were pretty crazy!

Anyway, once we got to the beach and put on our brand new bathing suits and went swimming in the warm clear water, I forgot all about the mosquitoes. Greece is a very popular spot for british people to go on holiday, and for good reason. Tickets and accomodation can be bought together in a package holiday deal for quite cheaply and the weather is everything that Britain hasn’t got: sun, sun, and more sun. In the peak season, which is right now, the population on this island, skiathos, rises from 4,000 to 70,000. Yet it is still quite pleasant, despite the crowds.

The local people are also quite friendly, which I found somewhat surprising given the fact that their home is being invaded by the British each summer. I guess it still works out well for the locals because all these tourists are spending their money here. especially on overpriced food and beach toys. (1.50 euros for a bag of chips, 1.90 for a can of kidney beans…keep in mind that 1 euro = 1.50 canadian dollars) I appreciate now more than before just how low the cost of living is in alberta.

Anyway, we spent most of the day lounging on the beach. We found a mostly empty, very small beach hidden away, and when we went in the water, I noticed that there were lots of fish swimming around my legs! At one point, I was standing still and looking off in the distance somewhere, and I felt a nibble on my fingertip! after we came back from swimming that afternoon, we went and bought a snorkel mask so we can check out the rest of the marine life there is to see.

Scheduled for the rest of our two weeks (tentatively, anyway) is beach camping, a trip to the deserted city on the north side of skiathos, checking out the saturday nightlife, ferrying to the neighbouring islands of the northern sporades chain (skopelos, Alonissos and skyros) and even more lounging on the beach! :-)
