Grrls on the town

January 15, 2003

went to dublin last weekend on the bus to meet elicia… pictures will be up in a few days.

Dublin was a strange mix of north-americanism, london-ness, and irish. the suburbs and industrial parks, with family resturants sitting in a nest of parking spots reminded me of canada. But the architecture was all quite british european, georgian buildings and pillars and statues. We went out to eat, shopping, and took in some culture – the wax museum, the modern art museum, the book of kells and trinity college. We stayed in a hostel and ate noodles at a resturaunt called wagamama which satisfied some need in me that marketing has created – for conscientious yet self-centered food choices, which are supposed to reflect on a greater personal global conscience. It was a great weekend holiday :)

the book of kells was quite cool – it was made in 806 ad by a bunch of monks, and it was right there under glass to look at. I was amazed by the detail and intricacy, because in all the posters and reprints I had seen it is hard to get an appreciation for the actual size of the illustrations.

It was nice to come home to a new house too, although I am much more motivated to get the rest of the unpacking and setting up done soon. I’m just tired of being mid-move all the time, and it’s nicer to be able to use all the stuff you have just dragged around instead of having it hidden away in boxes. It is coming along, the main things yet to do are setting up furniture and putting up posters, and then we need to find some storage shelves or boxes or something for the random stuff that hasn’t been put out yet. But I am feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after my holiday… clutter be gone!
