freedom

July 5, 2002

The curry was very good. We went to a resturaunt that was reccomended by Tom’s aunt Allison, called Diwala. It was quite tasty, and the dishes came from the south part of India: dosas, biryani, chapatti. however, it was a popular resturaunt for several reasons, and it seemed to me that they made the chairs and booths moderately uncomfortable so that you would want to get the bill and leave right after your meal. this frees up new tables at a faster rate, and more available tables means that you can serve more people per evening. And the people that come for the lunchtime all-you-can-eat buffet can’t eat quite as much as they would if they could slouch out.

Then, on our way home, a guy in a renovation crew hollered out to clem that the 4 televisions sitting on the curb were being thrown away, but they still worked and we could have them if we wanted. So 4 out of the 5 of us that went for dinner picked up a 21-inch television that was covered with dust from the betting shop that it came from, and hauled them all back. the looks on people’s faces as we went by were priceless. Tom’s friends were great sports about it all too… apparently only canadians will willingly help an aquaintance haul heavy televisions home on a whim.

It was great to sit around all evening talking to londonized canadians. the best parts are the silly little things that combine to become a large common ground. Like answering simply “U of A” when asked where I went to school. And the fact that they knew the spot where we got married, and remembered where cafe mosaics is.

Rosalind asked me if I was enjoying being in England, and i told her that I was, but was finding it a bit hard to not have a home yet, to just be floating around from place to place. She replied “oh, I would have thought you would be enjoying the freedom of being able to go wherever you wanted.” And I realized that she was right.

So we will most likely be running off to Spain or Greece after the weekend. There are quite a lot of holiday packages around that include both airfare and accomodations for a very reasonable cost…between 」100 and 」150 for a week in spain or greece. We were also looking at the “clubbing holiday” packages for places like Ibiza, but they are much much cheaper, and I suspect that means that you just get a substandard hotel because they are assuming that you won’t be sleeping much. :-) What I would really like is some sun and sand and surf before heading off to the land of mist and cloud and forest. Not to say that I don’t like mist and cloud and forest, because I DO, but I feel like I need a bit more summer. So, soon enough, we will be off for some sunbathing at the seaside.
