I finally had a chance to have a chat with one of the new girls at work. She’s from California, and it was great to talk to someone who had gone through all the same things that I went through in the process of adjusting to a foreign culture. As she said, “If you’d moved to India you would be much more fogiving with yourself but because Ireland is english-speaking and european you expect it to be easy.” It’s so true. But it’s nice to know that I’m not the only person who came here with great career goals and wild dreams and found them much harder to actually execute than imagine.
I’ve requested a University Prospectus, and I’m looking at Master’s Degrees and Higher Diplomas and the qualifications for the Mature Student program. My dream is to go back to University in the fall, most likely in a one or two year long Higher Diploma program in something like Social Policy or Youth and Community Work. Although I did look at the description for the Psychiatric Nursing program, which would mean doing a four-year science degree. I’m keeping my options open at the moment.
Tom has suggested going back and doing a Masters in Philosophy. The thought of it makes me drool a little. But I fear ending up in a trickier spot at the end of it in terms of finding employers who want me to work for them. What do you do with a Masters in Philosophy? Go back and do a Doctorate, I guess.
