consumerist fulfillment part 2 and the art of spring cleaning
after my embarassing incident involving the snooty men and the missing wallet, I went back the next day to actually purchase the cake tin. I also wanted to scope out the couch selection again, after having a long discussion with tom over the phone about whether i should actually lay down the plastic for a couch.
Three magical conditions had changed:
1. I was armed with a credit card
2. A sale had just started
3. Clearance stock was on display
To make a long and rather boring story of measuring widths and checking care instructions much shorter, i bought a couch. It is red, and soft and beautiful. It was a limited edition, last one in the warehouse, fifteen percent off deal. i can’t wait until it arrives.
What makes me feel kind of strange is how much of a buzz I got off that transaction of money for goods. It has to be the largest single purchase i have made by myself, apart from plonking down my tuition money each semeseter for four years. And it made me feel like some kind of consumerist superhero, earning enough money by not quitting my job so that I can buy this piece of wood and fabric and duck feathers to make me happy. I am telling myself that it is a necessity, that furniture is not a luxury and that we should not make our guests sit on the floor while we sit on the lumpy futon. But i’m still experiencing a moral crisis and thinking about how many ducks had to die to stuff those cushions.
So, in preparation for the new arrival, and just cause it’s springtime, we’ve been doing a mad clean over the past few days. this involves pulling out every bit of string and old birthday cards and that pile of cardboard boxes that we haven’t thrown away because chances are we will move again sometime in the next couple of years, and rearranging the piles and putting up a few more shelves and hiding the boxes in the attic. because we have accumulated so much stuff, it takes longer than just a day to put it all back after being pulled out, and so now there is all the cleaning up after the cleaning to do. not to mention the regular cleaning, and the mopping of the kitchen floor.
phew, it makes me tired just to think of all that work. and all the dust and pollen is making me sneeze like a maniac. time for another piece of chocolate, I think, and maybe I’ll bake a coffee cake in my new pan. happy easter everyone!
