chaotic stuff
We have been slowly unpacking and setting up our stuff since it arrived at 8:30 am sunday morning. The moving guys were very gracious and helped us move it all upstairs, and for the first little while we just opened boxes willy-nilly and pulled out the familiar and long-lost pieces of our home.
It is amazing the difference familiar pictures, quilts, sculptures, speakers, pots & pans, sweaters, and flame shoes can make. Especially music, actually. We had been listening to the local pirate radio station here, radio friendly, and while they can have some good shows on friday and saturday night most of the time it descends quite quickly into crap rap and r&b. My state of mind feels much more at ease with some chilled-out-but-still-groovy-and-interesting tunes.
However, there has been an unexpected side effect to suddenly having more stuff in our house, and that is one big chaotic mess. We are struggling to keep it under control, but there aren’t really a lot of cupboards or closets/storage space in this flat. The quilts are living on the couch at the moment, and the shoes are piling up on the stairs. We need an Ikea! We need smart, stylish storage solutions!
I also started my new job on Monday. It’s going well, although the first few days of a new job are always kind of stressful. The first six weeks are training, and then we do six weeks on the phone doing just account queries and power outage calls, and then we go back for another two weeks of training to do calls where an electrician would need to be sent out. It’s an odd paradox, that we have so much to learn but we are going so slowly at the moment. ohwell…I should be thankful that I’m not overwhelmed by piles and piles of procedures and codes at this point.
My main concern at the moment is just that I am finding it hard to connect with any of my co-workers. I need some new friends, but I don’t speak the right language to chat about coronation street or eastenders or big brother or hello! magazine. I might have to start watching tv just for the cultural education.
